So there I was. 500m below sea level. Watching chunks of the seabase sink around me. One hand flailing against smooth scales. The strong hand gripping the shard of metal I had lodged in the creature's eye socket. A reaper. Wounded, maybe, but I was about 2 meters short of those jaws and I wasn't done yet. |
|||
God damn sea monsters. God damn aliens. God damn Alterra. |
|||
You don't need to be smart to win a fight. You do need to go for the head. Quickly and ruthlessly. If you got time to think that a good defense is part of a good offense then you'll be doing it from the floor because that's where I left your severed head. |
|||
Ain't no way they're gettin' inside that alien base without this tablet. |
|||
I'd already taken out one eye. I damn near carved out the other. And then I saw where the creature had carried us. We were clear of the caverns, headed for the void at the crater's edge. Blinded, we were spiralling deeper. |
|||
I knew I had a choice, if you'd like to call it that. Hold on or let go. |
|||
I figured the Torgals were already dead. Figured if I let go of this monster it had every reason to turn back around and finish me off. Even blind they can hear food. An if not, well, I could hear the ghost leviathans off in the distance. I'd have them to contend with next. |
|||
So it was a choice. But it was a choice between finishing a fight, or the total unknown. And I already had a blade in her head. |
|||
So I held on. And she took us deeper. |

I had maybe one minute of air in the tank. Back then I could go another three on what was in my lungs. So I had four minutes to kill the reaper, minus a few to get back to the surface. |
|||
These Alterra idiots. Putting up a seabase on my patch of seabed? Oh, they're gonna be feelin' it in the mornin'. |
|||
I want to get this said. If I'm telling this story. Killing. It ain't so black and white. I don't like to kill. I like to fight. But some of the time, you can't fight without killing. And I ain't the slightest bit nervous about that. Sometimes the key to survival is working together. And sometimes it's on the inside of some unfortunate soul's rib cage. I ain't one to question when's when. |
|||
So we fought. Neither one of us would give up. But unlike her, I only had one minute to win the fight. |
|||
Once it was done I made for the surface. I'd been on the planet for months by then. I can't tell you it was the first time I'd felt that I was drowning. I can tell you that the feeling never changes. |
|||
The realization, that you're drowning. The dread. I was almost grateful to start blacking out. |
|||
When I hit the surface and caught my breath, I realized we'd come further out than I thought. No landmarks. No lifeforms. No seabed. Just ocean. I was out in the void. Further than I'd been before. And the current was carrying me out to sea. |

A medium-sized predator known to spit supercooled salt water to freeze its prey from afar. |
|||
Frosty. |
|||
⚫ | |||
* A large bladder on the brinewing's underside fills with sea water as it swims |
|||
* Some water is filtered out through an internal membrane, leaving behind a strong saline solution |
|||
* Two flat, transparent, extendable fins act as radiators, releasing heat and cooling the bladder's contents |
|||
* The brinewing can then contract its bladder, expelling the supercooled brine and freezing the seawater up to several meters away from it |
|||
While warm-blooded lifeforms may suffer minor injuries on contact with the brine, it is not cold enough to freeze most vertibrates. The real danger is being helplessly encased in a block of ice, sinking ever closer towards the brinewing's jaws. |

Advanced Theories
Alien Eggs |
<poem>Evidence suggests that a substantial number, if not all of the local species reproduce through egg-laying. Eggs can be found resting on the seafloor, buried beneath detritus, or even wedged into cracks in the rock.
Different species likely favor different biomes as their nesting grounds. Eggs discovered in the wild are in some form of natural stasis, likely awaiting ideal conditions in which to hatch, or the delivery of some vital enzyme which will kick start the process. It is impossible to calculate the species of the egg from the exterior, however it may be possible to stimulate a hatching response if an egg is relocated to a suitable alien containment unit.</poem> |

Handheld Scanner |
<poem>The essential engineering, science and survival tool.
The scanner emits electromagnetic radiation in the specified direction, which is reflected by the environment and then analyzed to determine the physical make-up of the targeted object. It has four primary functions. Technological Analysis: Record the physical parameters of scanned technologies to add their blueprints to the PDA databank. These blueprints may then be constructed at the appropriate fabricator. The scanner is also equipped to break down damaged and otherwise useless devices into their base metals for salvage purposes. Organism Analysis: The scanner will attempt to match scanned organisms against the onboard database. If no match is found then the species will be assigned an easy-to-remember name, and a new databank entry will be created. Your PDA's AI will also attempt to synthesize theories on behavioral tendencies and evolutionary origins where possible, as well as deliver assessments on how best to approach them. Medical Analysis: Scanning any living organism will also display basic information on their state of health on the scanner's HUD. This information will be limited without access to a network database. Self-Scan: The user may instigate a self-scan to determine their own physical well-being. The scanner will search for foreign bacteria and other signs of ill-health and compare with available data to provide a diagnosis. Laser Cutter |
<poem>The ultra high frequency laser cutter is tuned specifically to cut through titanium and plasteel based materials at a thickness of up to 10cm. This makes it an essential tool for construction, salvage and rescue operations, but ineffective on natural obstacles.

Repair Tool |
<poem>The repair tool can be targeted at any common device - control panels, habitat modules, radios etc. - to stitch wires and seams back together at the atomic level. All good technicians keep one of these under their pillow.
Most people don't care why it works, just that it saved their life that one time - but in case you're curious, it combines scanner and fabricator technologies to determine the proper specifications for the targeted object, and then rearranges the available physical material to match the original specs. 'The Alterra Repair Tool: Get your fix.'</poem> |

Repulsion Cannon |
<poem>The repulsion cannon is a modification of the base propulsion cannon which enhances its propulsion effect at the cost of the ability to draw objects closer. It can be fabricated using a modification station, and is commonly employed in self-defense, and as a less-than-lethal firearm.</poem> |

Stasis Rifle |
<poem>The stasis rifle uses patented technology to slow time around an entity to as near to a full stop as the laws of physics will permit, essentially anchoring the target in place without affecting its internal workings. It is designed to facilitate scientific and engineering operations by expanding the window of opportunity for action in time-sensitive scenarios.
The stasis rifle features an independent, replaceable power cell, and the trigger may be held down to increase the area of effect and duration. Common applications include:

Alien Containment |
<poem>Despite huge, Alterra-led advancements in stellar technology, exploring new worlds still has its challenges, and alien lifeforms are one of them. That's why we built the alien containment unit. The unit is designed primarily to breed larger or more dangerous species.
|
Source: TBA |
Aquarium |
<poem>The aquarium is designed to hold and sustain up to eight small aquatic organisms, and fits inside a regular multipurpose habitat room.
Aquatic creatures make up 70% of all known species, making the aquarium a commonly deployed tool in many exploratory operations. It is just as often used to house livestock for later consumption as it is to hold specimens for xeno research. An automated environment regulation system means there's no need to feed or care for your subjects. NB Due to its size the regular aquarium is not rated for breeding applications, and creatures are highly unlikely to mate. Construct a full size alien containment unit for this purpose.</poem> |

Fabricator |
<poem>Fabrication technology is the power to rearrange matter at the atomic level. It was the catalyst behind the great expansion, and remains the backbone of the modern world.
Fabricators come in all shapes and sizes, but the most common are small enough to be wall-mounted, and are used for everything from constructing everyday implements to cooking dinner. It is common today for households to keep a store of generic base materials on hand for any eventuality.</poem> |

Floodlight |
<poem>The standard issue floodlight is designed to focus a bright beam of light in a single direction, useful in all kinds of industrial and emergency operations. Functions in all known environments.</poem> |

Habitat Builder |
<poem>The Alterra handheld habitat builder has been an essential tool of xenoscientists, colonists and emergency relief crews across 11 different trans-govs for more than 50 years.
Quick Start Guide:
Primary habitat systems like oxygen generation and flood control, as well as modules like the fabricator draw power and will not function without it. Additional compartments reduce overall hull integrity, depending on the external pressure. 'Quick-Build Habitats: A home far, far away from home.'</poem> |

Interior Growbed |
<poem>Designed for use exclusively inside regulated habitat modules, the interior growbed is more compact than the outdoor version, and features a hydroponic nutrient delivery system.</poem> |

Modification Station |
<poem>Where the standard fabricator atomically rearranges raw materials to form complex devices, the mod station is able to combine complex devices to enhance their function. Most industrial vessels are fitted with a complement of equipment modification stations, which enable engineers to adapt their tools on the fly.
To conserve hard drive space the modification station is excluded by default from most personal emergency blueprint libraries; however extreme environments such as ocean and desert class planets may necessitate the adaptation of basic survival tools for unanticipated applications. For this reason access to a mod station is always recommended.</poem> |

Moonpool |
<poem>The moonpool is an essential module for long-term exploration. Its primary function is as a dry dock for small vehicles such as the Seamoth and Prawn suit.
The large central chamber contains a pressurized pool which provides ready access to the surrounding waters, and comes as standard with equipment for raising and recharging a vehicle. When outfitted with a vehicle modification station the moonpool can be used to build and equip vehicle upgrades. Ratings:

Alien Research Site Zero |
<poem>During their occupation of 4546B, the mysterious race of space-faring aliens we refer to as the Almanac selected a number of sites around the planet at which to build their vast facilites. While the focus of their mission to save their kind from the bacterium was the emperor specimen contained at the primary containment facility, their other installations served a variety of precautionary and support roles.
While zero sector contains a number of now-familiar alien sanctuaries, the alien facility in close proximity to the main research station remains one of the few whose purpose we have yet to discover. This will be the focus of our endeavors in zero sector.
Frozen beneath the ice hundreds of years ago, the facility lays dormant to this day. We have progressed only through the first forcefield, gaining access to the antechamber where a combination lock of a type we don't understand prevents further exploration. Whatever is inside, it is protected more thoroughly than anything else we have encountered.</poem> |

Architect Psychology |
<poem>Without direct access to a living specimen we can only make reasoned guesses as to how they experienced life and interacted with the world around them.
It is clear their mastery of the physical world far outstrips out own, and that they have emerged from the other side of some great technological and intellectual upheaval. They have not become inanimate parts in a larger consciousness, nor ascended to some non-physical form of existence. In short they have somehow maintained a level of individuality - as evidenced in translated logs - yet they are connected with one another and their world in a way we can only imagine.</poem> |

Profile: Research Base Zero |
<poem>Welcome to your home away from home on 4546B. This pamphlet will guide you through your new accomodation.
Zero sector is comprised of 2 square kilometers of ocean, located near the planet's equator. Unusual environmental conditions leave this area in almost permanent winter, interrupted by extreme weather events. For unknown reasons it was selected by the aliens as a hub for their installations. Life in the area has flourished since the release of enzyme 42 into the larger ecosystem.
You have been posted to the main sector base, located on a large ice cap in the west, just below the primary alien research site. From here you will conduct research into alien communications and technologies, and conduct away missions to unmanned installations elsewhere in the sector.

Robin Goodall - Alterra Application Interview |
<poem>INTERVIEWER: Why have you applied for this role?
ROBIN: Everyone's talking about 4546B. Who hasn't applied?! Maybe Jeffreys. INTERVIEWER: No, Jeffreys signed on last week. Why THIS assignment? ROBIN: The last time we found sentient alien life was Strader VI. Seventeen years ago. It's been fun, but frankly I'm bored, and you have telepathic squid. INTERVIEWER: I should tell you that rumors about space-faring aliens on the planet ARE rumors. If that's why you're here you'll be disappointed. ROBIN: I'm a xeno-linguist. Space-faring aliens are our holy grail. I want it, but I don't expect to get it. INTERVIEWER: What qualifies you for this position? ROBIN: There are creatures out there you couldn't imagine, let alone understand. Do you know how I talk to them? INTERVIEWER: I think you correlate responses against stimuli and- ROBIN: I do what they do. If they bather in liquid nitrogen and talk with their feet, I put on a coat and I pull a handstand. But this recruitment process? It's most alien of all. So I'm trying to correlate my responses here. I want us to understand each other. Put me on that planet. I'll talk with the fish for you. INTERVIEWER: Thank you, Miss Goodall. Sandra - Sandra?! - Sandra will show you out. Sandra?!</poem> |

<poem>ROBIN: Alterra just offered me the Vesper job.
SAM: That's great! ROBIN: You had something to do with this. SAM: No, I- ROBIN: Lying is against the rules. SAM: How could you tell? ROBIN: It's been years. You should be insufferable with joy right now. SAM: I just knew you'd want this job. SAM: I might be if you hadn't thrown the job interview. You're better at talking to people than that. You totally rattled my HR guy. SAM: I can't tell you. You have to trust me. It's a once in a lifetime assignment. ROBIN: What does that mean? [...] You're not serious[...] You can't be[...] I love you. SAM: So I remind myself when I don't see you. ROBIN: I've got to go do things, bye!</poem> |

Sam Goodall - Voicelog X |
<poem>SAM: Sir, I've been running some diagnostics, and I found something strange. Contractor Goodall's GPS has her traveling all over the sector.
MAXIM: That's what we pay her for. SAM: But sir, she's not running Alterra operations. And she's been evasive when questioned. You asked me to tell you if I thought she was lying, Sir. MAXIM: You would see your sister incarcerated for the good of the company? Why? SAM: She's foolhardy. She's putting us at risk. I don't like it, but she's left me no choice. MAXIM: Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I want you to give her whatever she needs, and to watch what she does with it. SAM: Sir, why not just bring her in? MAXIM: What do I care about this? SAM: Sir, it's a security risk. The enzyme is our only protection against the kharaa bacterium. If there was an outbreak we'd be defenseless. MAXIM: Was it an accident, or sabotage? SAM: The enzyme is unstable, Sir, but they've never seen this before. MAXIM: So have grunts on the planet send us more. We drilled an ice tunnel to encourage a flock of penglings to surface near the habitat, where we've been recording their behaviour; and accessed a frozen over facility, interpreted the symbols on an alien control panel, and hot-wired it to accept Alterra frequencies. I think we deserve a C+.
I give it a D. It'd be lower, but my sister's carrying the rest of you.

Alien Architect Reconstitution Research |
<poem>There is no evidence that the alien architects colonized other planets in our galaxy, and we are as yet unable to reach the galaxy from where we believe they arrived. No living member of their species has ever been encountered. We have nonetheless learned a great deal about them from what they left behind.
Their architecture suggests they are approximately 50% larger than humans, and non-bipedal. It is unclear whether they interact with their technologies through naturally or artificially developed sensory apparatus, but it is clear they had mastered the complexities of genetic and technological alteration. Of most interest is their use of sanctuary sites dotted around the planet. Our efforts to decipher the data stored there have so far been in vain, but evidence suggests they used as emergency shelters when the kharaa bacterium was first released, the aliens somehow able to download their minds to the databanks for later retrieval. This suggests their relationship with their corporeal bodies is quite different from our own. How many times an individual may transfer between different bodies, and the exact mechanism by which they do, is currently unknown. Nonetheless this suggests it may be possible in the future to build, grow or salvage an appropriate body and 'reawaken' one of these aliens. Whether such an entity would have any independent function is entirely another matter - however even in a vegetative state we imagine such a construct would have wide-reaching ramifications for our ability to interface with the alien technologies, and gain further access to their facilities. We have begun an excavation at [Coordinates corrupted]. We believe some of the necessary materials may be located there. [Clue to precursor body part location here] We will remain in contact with Research Base Gamma as this ice front closes in. If we need to abandon the base their position at [Clue to second abandoned Alterra base here] will be our closest point of refuge.</poem> |

Sanctuary Zero Location Data |
<poem>Sanctuary Zero was discovered some months ago, operating on low power. All attempts to access the facility have failed. It is located in the so-called Twisty Bridges, an area dense with macro-flora, reaching 100m-300m in depth.
The fast growth of the tubular, organic 'bridges' throughout the area prevents a permanent route to the facility from being established. It can be located at a depth of 200m, and contractors are advised to use visual reference to locate a viable path. The alien architects constructed multiple sanctuary facilities around 4546B. Their purpose was to store and preserve the aliens' mental states for later retrieval in case of emergency. While many individuals fled to these sanctuaries when the kharaa contagion was released, most succumbed before they could reach one. Of those sanctuaries we have gained access to, none have contained a viable alien consciousness, and it is further unclear what sense could be made of the data if they had.</poem> |

Marguerit Maida's Log #1 |
<poem>So there I was.
You don't need to be smart to win a fight. You do need to go for the head. Quickly and ruthlessly. If you got time to think that a good defense is part of a good offense then you'll be doing it from the floor because that's where I left your severed head. I'd already taken out one eye. I damn near carved out the other. And then I saw where the creature had carried us. We were clear of the caverns, headed for the void at the crater's edge. Blinded, we were spiralling deeper. I knew I had a choice, if you'd like to call it that. Hold on or let go. I figured the Torgals were already dead. Figured if I let go of this monster it had every reason to turn back around and finish me off. Even blind they can hear food. An if not, well, I could hear the ghost leviathans off in the distance. I'd have them to contend with next. So it was a choice. But it was a choice between finishing a fight, or the total unknown. And I already had a blade in her head. So I held on. And she took us deeper.</poem> |

Marguerit Maida's Log #2 |
<poem>I had maybe one minute of air in the tank. Back then I could go another three on what was in my lungs. So I had four minutes to kill the reaper, minus a few to get back to the surface.
So we fought. Neither one of us would give up. But unlike her, I only had one minute to win the fight. Once it was done I made for the surface. I'd been on the planet for months by then. I can't tell you it was the first time I'd felt that I was drowning. I can tell you that the feeling never changes. The realization, that you're drowning. The dread. I was almost grateful to start blacking out. When I hit the surface and caught my breath, I realized we'd come further out than I thought. No landmarks. No lifeforms. No seabed. Just ocean. I was out in the void. Further than I'd been before. And the current was carrying me out to sea.</poem> |

The Great Barrier |
<poem>While sentient life has been discovered throughout the galaxy, a spacefaring (or Type II) alien civilization has yet to be encountered by humanity.
The discovery of such a civilization - dead or alive - has thus become something of a holy grail amongst the scientific community. Aside from the obvious financial, technological and philosophical value of such a discovery, it may serve one yet more vital purpose: it might save humanity from the great barrier. The great barrier explains why humanity appears to be alone amongst the stars. It is a theoretical obstacle in the path of every civilization, which causes it to self-destruct before it can leave behind a trace. It may be the development of nuclear weapons, genetic modification or artificial intelligence; or something else we can't possibly imagine. Since we have discovered that many simple forms of alien intelligence we can assume that the barrier occurs somewhere inbetween the beginnings of a civilization, and its eventual colonization of its galaxy. In other words, we have no way to know whether we have already passed safely through it, or if our doom still lies ahead. Finding a spacefaring alien civilization would provide us vital clue for determining where we stand in relation to the barrier, and how humanity might eventually pass through or otherwise avoid it.</poem> |

Brinewing |
<poem>A medium-sized predator known to spit supercooled salt water to freeze its prey from afar.
While warm-blooded lifeforms may suffer minor injuries on contact with the brine, it is not cold enough to freeze most vertibrates. The real danger is being helplessly encased in a block of ice, sinking ever closer towards the brinewing's jaws. Assessment: Beware a full bladder</poem> |

Crashfish |
<poem>This unusual species has developed an emergency defense mechanism based on mutually assured destruction.
Enables the creature to identify and track potential predators.
The sulfur plant has evolved to feed on sulfuric compounds secreted by the crashfish, which makes its nest within its leaves. Stronger, more protective plants provide superior nesting grounds, which in turn provide the plant with more nutrients from larger crashfish. 3. Defense Mechanism: Concentrations of sulfur build up in the organism over time. If the crashfish collides with something at sufficient speed the spikes on its torso are impacted, triggering an explosive chemical reaction.

Skyray |
<poem>The skyray has a bird-like head, and feathered wings which enable it to fly. Skyrays are commonly found circling floating structures, and rarely venture far out to sea. They will perch on dry land, but are prone to flee on approach.
Although its wings give it some resemblance in silhouette to the waterborne rays on 4546B, analysis shows no greater genetic overlap with those species than the planetary average - in fact the skyray appears to have split off the evolutionary tree much earlier than most.
Largely seed-based. Skyrays have not been observed diving for food, which implies they rely on land-based plants for their survival. Assessment: Presence may indicate nearby dry land.</poem> |
Source: Scan Skyrays |
Titan Holefish |
<poem>A large, docile herbivore which emits oxygen and is defended by the small, aggressive symbiotes which accompany them.
The titan holefish has evolved entirely beyond basic survival mechanisms like speed, intelligence or hunting. It exists in a semi-permanent state of unreflective calm, swimming forward on impulse, fully trusting the complex ecosystem which supports it. Assessment: Valuable oxygen source, if you can reach it</poem> |

Bladderfish |
<poem>This unusual herbivore appears to be mostly defenseless, and bears little resemblance to the other lifeforms around it.
The bladderfish is able to filter air and seawater into its body cavity through a unique membrane which surrounds its spine like a bladder. This allows it to remove and consume organic particulate caught on the way, and adjust its buoyancy.
Can be angled and contracted to pump out water and achieve low-velocity, guided propulsion.
Assessment: Edible (oxygen may be retrieved from the bladder and added to tanks on consumption); membrane has applications as a natural water filter</poem> |
Source: Scan Bladderfish |
Hoopfish |
<poem>Small, school-mentality prey fish with a unique method of propulsion, and a distant relative of the bladderfish.
Rather than swimming, this lifeform uses the fine green antennae which encircle its body to alter the composition of the water in front of it, allowing it to 'sail' into the low density space created.
May be a camouflage adaptation for mid-range light wavelengths, possibly indicating the hoopfish is more active at dawn and dusk.
While schools of hoopfish will form periodically and evade predators en masse, this behavior is more social than it is defensive, and lone hoopfish are often found hunting for food and displaying generally curious behavior.

Triops |
<poem>An effective bottom-feeder with unusual trioptical vision.
Forward-facing eyes are unusual in prey creatures, not least three of them. Each eye however is angled slightly outwards, which gives the triops a field of view of almost 240 degrees. Careful use of this powerful faculty is likely what has kept the triops alive to date. Assessment: Edible</poem> |

Rockgrub |
<poem>A small, luminescent scavenger, roughly thumb-sized. This creature may be a distant relative of the sand shark, sharing that species' unusual limbs, segmented exoskeleton and burrowing behavior.
Its circular set of teeth is designed to tear up clumps of coral and sea grass caught on the rocks.
Five legs, two arms and a large flipper allow the rockgrub to cling to and walk across rock faces in search of food, and swiftly swim to safety when under attack.
Glowing green in the dark would seem like a poor survival strategy, but this adaptation may be a mating behavior or other specialized process, engaged in by only a fraction of the total population at any one time. Or perhaps being eaten is simply part of the rockgrub's lifecycle.

Creepvine |
<poem>A kelp species concentrated in large forests, in shallow, sandy waters. Loose roots anchor the plant to the sea floor, from where it grows steadily toward the surface in pursuit of sunlight.
The stem is fibrous and rich in iron, making it both a viable base material for fabrication of textiles, as well as a basic foodstuff. Assessment: Vital alien resource - Edible - Construction Applications</poem> |

Creepvine Seeds |
<poem>Mature creepvine plants that have survived the predation of small herbivores produce these bioluminescent seed clusters, which may be knocked loose by currents or consumed and later deposited by predators.
The embryo is surrounded by a thick oil and silicone layer, which would disperse into the ground as the outer skin deteriorated. This may provide the seedling with the nutrients it needs to survive the low-light conditions on the sea bed. Assessment: Vital alien resource - Construction Applications</poem> |

<poem>These organic structures grow on cave walls. The purple sacks which arise from the surface contain a low-density gel laced with spores. These burst from time to time, floating towards the surface and attaching onto the next rock face they encounter.
While the gel sack is edible, its low-density renders it an invaluable advanced construction material. Assessment: Edible - Aerogel construction applications</poem> |
