The Escape Pod is the player's current starting location. It is the only one that withstood the crash of the Colony Ship the player was on. Its frame identifies it as Lifepod 5.

The Standard 2-Berth Emergency Lifepod 5 is the vessel in which Ryley Robinson survived the crash of the Aurora at the beginning of Subnautica, landing in the Safe Shallows.

Story
The player can get in and out through the top or bottom, by using either the ladder or the bulkhead in the floor.
During the intro sequence the player, Ryley Robinson, climbs inside the Lifepod to escape the impending crash of the Aurora following the automated evacuation warning, apparently being the only one to reach Lifepod 5. After launching, he witnesses an explosion from the ship through the top hatch window, causing a shockwave to strike the Lifepod. A panel flies off the opposite wall (along with the Fire Extinguisher), exposing wires and knocked about in freefall until slamming into the player's face, knocking him out. The player wakes up three hours later to warning alarms and quickly notices that the Lifepod is on fire, and puts it out with the Fire Extinguisher, fortunately now laying nearby on the floor. The Lifepod then becomes the player's starting location.

Interior
The internals appear to be damaged and smoldering. The damage can be repaired using the Welder but has no gameplay effect.
The Lifepod has two opening hatches: one on the ceiling, which can be reached from the inside by climbing a ladder, and another in the floor and submerged. The internals of the vessel suffered damage during the crash and are smoldering from the fire damage. The Lifepod Secondary Systems and the radio can be repaired using the Repair Tool, turning on the secondary lights in the pod and enabling messages to be received respectively.

The Lifepod houses a Fabricator, which will be visited often until the player builds a Seabase, fitted with another fabricator, a small amount of storage with a few pieces of survival equipment and rations, a Fire Extinguisher which is used to put out the fire in the beginning of the game, a wall-mounted Medical Kit Fabricator generating First Aid Kits every 10 minutes and a wall-mounted radio receiving and broadcasting emergency messages and distress calls. The Habitat Builder can not build anything in, or on, the lifepod: a separate seabase needs to be constructed for expansion.
It houses the Fabricator and Fragment Analyzer and thus will be visited often in the early stages of the game.

Energy Usage
It also contains a small amount of storage that houses a random collection of, equipment, and resources at the beginning of the game.
Energy is provided to the Lifepod by three Solar Power Cells on the bulkhead, with a capacity of 25 Energy each (the combined capacity of one Solar Panel). These Power Cells cannot be removed. The Fabricator will drain energy from the Power Cells when used (except in Creative Mode), and they will recharge themselves over time. There is no obvious solar panel on the lifepod's hull, although it is most likely to be the large black square underneath the pod's stenciling. The three Power Cells add up to 75 Energy, 25 less than a battery.

Location
The Escape Pod can also be moved around by pushing it while swimming or with a vehicle.
Lifepod 5 spawns in a random location in the Safe Shallows biome less than a kilometer from the center of the map (coordinates 0,0,0). The lifepod can spawn quite close to the radiation zone, and in some rare cases, a large creature can nudge it into the radiation area.
