Eggs are the unhatched forms of certain types of fauna. They can be used for research which will allow the player to create more advanced objects, such as Upgrades. Eggs are currently still in development.
Eggs usually are considered to be belonging to an unidentified fauna until they are analyzed using the Specimen Analyzer. An Egg of a given type can currently belong to up to two different species.
After an egg is analyzed, you can put it inside a Large Aquarium. The egg will take about ten in-game days to hatch, with the exception of the Reefback. When hatched, the creature within the egg will a smaller version of its respective species.
Eggs currently take up four slots in the inventory, with the exception of the Reefback, Shuttlebug, Mesmer, and Spadefish eggs. The Reefback taking up six and the latter three taking up one slot, respectively.

Cycle
After placing an egg inside an Aquarium, it will stay where it was placed. After about one in-game day, the egg will begin to move and pulse. After ten in-game days, the egg will hatch into a smaller version of it's species. This egg will slowly grow until it is mildly full sized or can fit in the Large Aquarium. Baby creatures can be picked up and placed outside in the water, where they will instantly become fully grown.
