Template:Infobox:Fauna Flora The Reefback is currently the largest passive life form in Subnautica, belonging to the fauna category.

It drifts gently in the waters of the Grassy Plateaus, mostly in pods of more than two.

Appearance

The Reefback is massive in size (see the "Gallery" section below for more). Most of the creature's body is comprised of a thick, purple carapace with a triangular front and a relatively small body concentrated in the posterior. Attached to its main body are three long whip-like tentacles.

The carapace is patterned with slightly bright blue dotted pattern across towards the back. Beneath its carapace, it is dark green with light blue bioluminescent stripes on the sides and in the middle. On either side of its body are seven yellow bioluminescent bulbs which are believed to be eyes, with two siphon-esque structures seen next to them.

Behavior

The Reefback swims slowly and aimlessly around the Grassy Plateaus biome. It almost never adjusts its current altitude, unless it bumps against something.

The Reefback's unique trait comes from its ability to emit a wide range of echoing, low-frequency calls.

Data Bank Entry

Armor plating on these huge lifeforms is thick enough to interfere with the spectroscope scanner. Limited data available.

Size ranges upwards of 20m. Tentacles provide low speed propulsion. Sociable, seen travelling in small pods. Profile consistent with a herbivore near the top of the food chain.

Predators: Unknown

Assessment: None at this time

Speculation

As seen in the concept art, it is possible that Reefbacks will be capable of sheltering an entire ecosystem of coral reefs on its back in a future update.

Trivia

  • The Reefback's calls are similar to those of real life whales, which could probably be its way of communication.
  • Within the Grassy Plateaus, Reefbacks may spawn up to ten times their original size, however, they cannot move and will instead spin in circles uncontrollably.
