It can be harvested for salt deposits without the use of any tools. Two can always be located southeast from Wreck 9 in the Northwestern Mushroom Forest. Purple Pinecones are unable to be scanned, and therefore have no databank entry. Why exactly this unpolished item is still in the game is unknown. It is theorized that the developers might have completely forgotten about it while developing Subnautica and was just left in the game with a low spawn rate, probably to revisit it in the future.
