It is used as a basic navigational device with cardinal direction indicators.   After the player has crafted one compass, it automatically falls in place in the paperdoll UI.   The Compass will appear in the fabricator once you have one piece of Magnetite. Alternatively, a Compass can be found in a destroyed lifepod. Due to its ability to tell the player where they are looking, it can be used for:  

• Keeping track of salvaged areas 
• Navigation with SeaGlide, Seamoth, and Cyclops
