The beacon can be placed anywhere in the ocean and picked up again.
The filled in circle is the Life pod. The circle with the outline is the Beacon.

The Beacon is a crafted Equipment.

The beacon can mark locations, for example Caves, Biomes or the habitat of rare Life Forms. It may be placed in the ocean and picked up again after each use. It must be placed on the Toolbar in order to drop the beacon.

It works similar to the Life pod marker, sending out a visible pulse that is slightly different from the life pod's beacon. Although, too many beacons can be hard to keep track of.
