They were built by the Precursors about one millennium previous to the crash of the Aurora spaceship. Four Alien Bases exist in total, on the Mountain Island the Quarantine Enforcement Platform, in the Lava Castle the Alien Thermal Plant, in the Lost River the Disease Research Facility, and in the Lava Lakes the Primary Containment Facility. Alien Data Terminals can be found within each, explaining the functions and purposes of the Bases. While there are optional Alien Caches scattered throughout the world, these Bases are extremely vital to the story and must be visited.

Caches

Caches are smaller bases found throughout the world that were designed for smaller purposes then the larger bases. Most caches are known as sanctuaries and were created to upload a Precursors mind into the nearby data hubs in case of emergency. The only cache that does not serve as a sanctuary is the Lost River Laboratory Cache.

All the Sancutary Caches must be unlocked with a Purple Tablet while the Lost River Laboratory Cache must be unlocked with a Orange Tablet.

Trivia

• Models for the Quarantine Enforcement Platform and various parts of bases were accidentally revealed during an experimental patch that added them into the entity gallery. A user on the forums revealed screenshots of the bases and they spread quickly. After seeing this, the developers quickly removed them and asked pictures of them to be prevented from spreading; they called it "a huge screw up". 
• The small structures that surround some of these bases are sonic deterrents, designed to keep predatory fauna from attacking the bases. However, they do not function in gameplay, and will not deter hostile creatures from attacking the player.
