They contain useful items that can be picked up by the player. The Supply Crate is not treated as a form of storage with an inventory grid. Instead it is a physical box with a lid that opens to allow access to in-world items inside. Once any items inside are taken, the Supply Crate remains: while the lid can be manipulated and objects discarded inside the crate if the player desires, it is essentially just a functionless piece of scenery. Sealed Supply Crates can only be found in the Mercury II. They can only be opened using a Laser Cutter. Sea Monkeys can steal certain items out of opened supply crates.
