Template:Infobox:Fauna Flora The Reefback is a life form belonging to the fauna category.
It is massive in size (see comparison with Seamoth in the gallery) and very slow. It appears to patrol the sea mostly in herds of more than two. They resemble a hybrid between a whale (for their impressive size and loud calls) and a Portuguese man o' war (for their purple, humped backs, tails, and strange underbellies).
The Reefback's attitude is passive, and it appears to be [[::Category:Cathemeral|cathemeral]] (active both at night and during the day). It is bioluminescent and emits very audible, low-frequency calls, which are similar to a whale's.
Reefbacks are currently found in the Mushroom Forest and Grassy Plateau biomes.
Appearance
Most of the Reefback's body is comprised of a purple carapace with a triangular front and a relatively small body concentrated in the posterior. Attached to its body are three long tail-like tentacles. The carapace is patterned with slightly bright blue dotted pattern across towards the back. Beneath its carapace, it is dark green with light blue luminescent stripes on the sides and in the middle. On either side of its body are seven yellow bioluminescent eyes. It has two tube-like mouths jetting out from both sides of its body that are always open, implying that the Reefback is a filter-feeder.
Speculation
As seen in the concept artwork, it is possible that the Reefback will shelter an entire unique ecosystem of coral on its back in a future update.
The Cyclops submarine can emit a low-frequency noise similar to the Reefback's calls. Reefbacks currently will "respond" to the "calls" of the Cyclops submarine, but do not seem to change movement pattern or other behaviors.
