Template:Class 2 FaunaThe Crabsquid is a large, aggressive fauna species. It can be found in the Northern Blood Kelp Zone, the Deep Grand Reef and the Lost River.

Appearance

The Crabsquid's main body has two layers; a translucent, bulbous sac resembling a comb jelly's body, and a hard brown green body within, similar to that of a real life squid's mantle. The Crabsquid's head consists of four, large blue eyes with black pupils and an oddly shaped mandible below them. The Crabsquid's legs resemble those of a horseshoe crab, though tipped with small fins. Its ten limbs are brown-colored and smooth. The two shortest limbs near its mouth form a pair of comparably small pincers.

Behavior

The Crabsquid swims aimlessly around on its own or moves slowly on the seabed with its limbs. Upon being approached, the creature will launch an attack, dealing 40 damage to the player. It can also be observed catching and eating smaller fauna. Similar to the Boneshark, the Crabsquid is attracted to light and will follow certain light sources, meaning that it can be distracted using lights from the Cyclops, Seamoth, Prawn Suit or Flares. However, using a vehicle's light will usually end up with the Crabsquid disabling it.

The Crabsquid attacks light sources. If light is shone at a Crabsquid they will retaliate with an EMP blast, temporarily disabling electronicsvehicles and Seabase power. This makes it very dangerous to build near an area inhabited by Crabsquids.

If the player approaches the Crabsquid in the Seamoth within its line of sight, the creature will chase the submersible a short distance and attack, dealing 20% damage to the vehicle's health. Take precaution with the Cyclops near a Crabsquid. If the Crabsquid takes notice of the Cyclops, it will either use its EMP blast which will disable the Cyclops or slash it, doing damage.

The Crabsquid frequently emits loud, echoing clicks for the purpose of echolocation.

This large predator can be found in deep waters, where it lurks amongst the blood kelp and membrane trees in search of prey.

  • 10 limbs feature different appendages for swimming, walking and offensive behavior
  • Feeds on small fish, which are identified in the murky waters through a combination of smell and light sensitivity
  • Attraction to light sources suggests jellyrays and spinefish may be amongst its natural prey
  • Aggressive when approached

Trivia

  • The Crabsquid's outer covering for its mantle resembles the body of a comb jellyfish.
  • The Crabsquid's sounds indicate it uses echolocation, which real life animals use.
  • The sounds of the Crabsquid were created using the sounds of a creaking door, dolphins, and a stock alien sound.[1]
