The Beacon is a machine crafted by using the fabricator.
The Beacon can mark locations, for example caves, biomes or seabases. It may be placed in the ocean and picked up again after each use.
It works similar to the life pod, Cyclops and Seamoth marker, just this is round and sending out a visible pulse that is different from the life pod's Beacon. The Beacon pings are faded out when nearby. Too many Beacons can be hard to keep track of.
A Beacon can be renamed by clicking on its front panel. A maximum of ten characters is supported.

Click on the front of the beacon. That toggles up a menu to rename beacon. (Beacon name length is limited to 14 symbols)

It looks like this when the player are at a distance of the beacon.
The ring-shaped signal belongs to a Beacon. The other is shaped like the Cyclops, Seamoth and Escape Pod.
The Beacon can be placed anywhere in the ocean or on land and picked up again
