An artwork by the developers suggests that they will be found in lava biomes.

They currently can be spawned in the game with the command: SPAWN LAVALIZARD.

Trivia

The Lava Lizard's model was used as an early version for the Stalker. As a result, the Lava Lizard still displays some of the behavior typical for the Stalker, such as its fondness for metal.
