Lava Zones are areas of the ocean floor that spew out lava and steam.

Some of the craters can be found deep in caves and others may be found in the open ocean. Every few seconds, the craters erupt, much like geysers, tossing steam and chunks of lava into the air. They can only be observed from a safe distance, as their eruptions will cause massive damage to the player (instant death). The craters are often resource-rich and it might be worth taking the risk to loot them. In their vicinity, diamonds can be found.

Currently, looting the bottom of the craters itself doesn't do any damage to the players, as long as the player retreats before the crater erupts again.
