The Fungal Sample is a raw material that can be obtained from the Coral Trees in Mushroom Forests. The in-game description states that the sample contains fungal enzymes.

The player can break off the "Mushroom Cap" of Coral Trees to obtain Fungal Samples, by hitting them with the knife or collide into them with the Seamoth or Cyclops, causing them to break and slowly drift to the ground. One "Mushroom Cap" yields about 2 to 14 Fungal Samples, depending on the size.
