They are capable of containing massive amounts of energy equivalent to a 'small nuclear detonation' in a stable state. Ion Crystals are used to power certain precursor devices, such as Alien Warp Gates, which will only function once an Ion Crystal has been inserted. They can also be used to craft Purple Alien Artifact, as well as upgraded versions of Batteries and Power Cells. Most importantly, Ion Crystals will be used to construct a vital piece of machinery to build the escape rocket. Ion Crystals can be found in Precursor Bases, as well as Precursor Caches. Large Ion Crystal Deposits can be found in the Precursor Thermal Power Generator and the Primary Containment Facility and require the Prawn Suit Drill Arm equipped to break them up before they can be picked up. Six Ion Crystal Pyramids are found in the aquarium of the Primary Containment Facility. These are larger than Large Ion Crystal Deposits, and yield more Ion Crystals when drilled. Ion Crystals can be created in the form of Large Ion Crystal Deposits in the antechamber within the Primary Containment Facility.

These alien cubes each store the equivalent energy of a small nuclear detonation. The alien technology is able to keep the stored atoms in a permanently stable state, however under the right conditions the reaction could be re-catalyzed and the energy released in a controlled manner. They were likely used as batteries, storing power generated at the main reactor and then transported wherever they were needed. Assessment: Possible source of escape-velocity energy?
