The Shoal of Fish is any group of fish that stay together for social reasons are shoaling and if the group is swimming in the same direction in a coordinated manner, they are schooling. Some species of life forms in Subnautica appear to be able to swarm. The individual fish are small, indicating that they are most likely juveniles. Usually Shoals of Fish appear closer to the surface but certain species do also swarm in the depths, or rather in deeper biomes, of the sea.

Appearance
The Shoal of Fish is any group of fish that stay together for social reasons are shoaling and if the group is swimming in the same direction in a coordinated manner, they are schooling. The Fauna Fish derive many benefits from shoaling behaviour including defence against predators. The shoal will flee from the player when approached. The player can break up a shoal by swimming through it, but the fish will swarm again once the danger is over. The "oddity effect" posits that any shoal member that stands out in appearance will be preferentially targeted by predators. This may explain why fish prefer to shoal with individuals that resemble themselves. The oddity effect would thus tend to homogenize shoals.
