The Aurora, as it appears in the game

The Aurora is a habitation ship sent to the planet for a terraforming mission before colony ships arrive. However, during its descent, the Aurora was struck by a mysterious energy pulse resulting in catastrophic hull failure, leading to its crash landing on the surface of the planet. A single escape pod was launched before impact, which contained the unconscious player character. As of now, there is no way into the ship because of the radiation surrounding the waters nearby.

The energy pulse impact and the following crash also resulted in large quantities of scrap metal and a few supply crates falling off and being dispersed in the vicinity of the ship.

The developers are currently working on making the wreckage of the ship explorable, as can be seen here. The wreckage will be explorable with the upcoming update, which will be published in the beginning of April. As of 15915 (4/3/2015) there is a hidden entrance to the ship in the wreckage that leads intoto a large T shaped corridor in the ship. Although there are doorways on either side of the corridor, they are blocked by rubble.
