The compass is good to use for directions.  Especially when diving deep using the [http://subnautica.wikia.com/wiki/Seamoth Seamoth ] submarine.  It appears at the top middle of the player HUD. The Compass only takes up one (1) slot in the player [http://subnautica.wikia.com/wiki/Storage inventory] .  The compass gives letters that indicate the direction you are facing.  North (N), South (S), East (E), and West (W) are the indicated values with ticks (vertical lines) to indicate degrees between each direction.   It is a valuable tool to use when keeping track of the areas to which you have scavenged from or to know where your lifepod and/or starting points are in relation to your current position.
