The Brain Coral is a common coral species. It produces useful bubbles, refilling ten units of oxygen per bubble.

It can also be harvested for Brain Coral Samples by using the Survival Knife and replanted in the Exterior Growbed or Alien Containment.

Appearance

The Brain Coral has a purple, hemispheric body. The bubbles are expelled from the circular protrusions with green holes in them that cover the body of the Brain Coral.

Behavior

The fact that the Brain Coral spawns in caves is very helpful and in some cases life-saving for the player, as it spawns three oxygen bubbles at a time, filling up the player's oxygen level by a total of 30 points. If a Brain Coral is picked up with the Propulsion Cannon, it can be used as a portable source of oxygen, although this method is rather unconventional.

The bubbles of Brain Coral produce splashes which are faintly visible at night on the surface, seeming like blinking lights which follow an extremely regular three-dot pattern. This "flashing" is easily confused with a distress beacon, but these "lights" are in fact not technological in origin. The splashes can be seen most easily by climbing to the top of Lifepod 5, although swimming to the exact location on the surface is more difficult. As Brain Coral does tend to grow in caves and at other points of interest, these splashes can still be followed by an astute survivalist in the early game for salvage or materials.

Brain Corals can be grown in Exterior Growbeds, providing an inexpensive and low-tech oxygen source that can be placed almost anywhere. When grown in this manner, careful positioning can allow the player to take advantage of four corals' bubble streams at the same time, allowing rapid refilling.

Data Bank Entry

A permanent, growing colony of microscopic organisms. This coral species has adapted to filter carbon dioxide from the environment, using the carbon to build the colony, and expelling the oxygen from specialized exhaust funnels. It is quite hardy, suggesting samples from a mature specimen could be grown artificially. Assessment: Air tanks are equipped to siphon oxygen from the water where possible
