The PDA description states that the sample contains fungal enzymes.

Description

The player can obtain Fungal Samples by harvesting a Mushroom Cap with the Knife. The only practical use for Fungal Samples is fuel for the Bioreactor.

Fungal Samples are required to make Hatching Enzymes, which is their only known crafting recipe.

Fungal Samples are not scannable.
