When Kharaa broke out Al-An's mind was likely stored whilst the body was destroyed. Al-An appears to be unique in that their mind has remained conscious unlike other stored minds which are in a dormant state.
Developer notes suggest that a Precursor computer core can be found within a Sanctuary Cache.[1] Given the nature of these sanctuaries in Subnautica, having been used as Precursor data storage, it is possible that this core may be what Al-An's mind is stored in.
Al-An appears to be capable of broadcasting messages, as shown when they deny Robin access to the Mountain Cave Base. It is currently unknown whether they are located within the facility, or is broadcasting from elsewhere, such as the aforementioned sanctuary.
Story
It seems that Robin Goodall will have to find and scan parts of Al-An's body throughout the story, including a head, arms, legs, and power source.[2] The end goal of this will be to fabricate them a new body at the Fabricator Base.[3] The reason for doing so is currently unknown, however, upon the completion of their new body, Al-An will act as an NPC.
Trivia
- The name "Al-An" or "Alan" is likely a play on the word "alien".
- It was previously stated by story writer Tom Jubert that Precursors would not be seen.[4] Ironically, it would be Jubert who later unwittingly revealed the existence of Al-An on the developers’ public Trello board.
