This article is about the Oculus. You may be looking for the Peeper.

Template:Class 2 FaunaThe Oculus is a small, passive fauna species only found in the Jelly Shroom Caves.

The Oculus is catchable and edible, raw, cooked or cured.

Appearance

The Oculus is a small, turquoise colored fish that looks very similar in appearance to the Peeper, although around twice the size.

It has two large bioluminescent purple eyes, with each featuring very detailed irises, and appears to have no visible mouth.

The Oculus has two tube-like organs that extend from its body to the top and the bottom of its head, which resemble backward-facing jets pushing it forward, much like how a Peeper maneuvers in the water. Its body ends with five swaying stalks for a tail, each having multiple purple stripes.

Also, the Oculus does not have a beak, unlike a Peeper.

Behavior

The Oculus is fairly agile and tends to form small shoals patrolling the Jelly Shroom Caves' vicinity while constantly producing faint but audible clicking sounds. It seems to be afraid of light, as any light source directly pointed at it will make it flee.

The Oculus will flee from the player much slower than its relative, therefore making it easier to catch.

This specimen shares genetic similarities with the common peeper. The two species' evolutionary history must have diverged as the oculus developed specialized apparatus for navigating the jellyshroom cave system.

  1. Highly Developed Night-vision:
Large, complex eyeballs provide this herbivore superior night-vision by comparison to its shallow-water cousin.

While the shallows and the cave system are separated by just a few meters of rock, foodstuffs and threats in each biome are completely different. It is possible a small school of peepers was once cut off in the caves, and the oculus species is how they adapted.
