They seem to power certain precursor devices, such as their teleporters, which will only function once an Ion Crystal has been inserted. Ion Crystals will be found in the Precursor Ground-To-Air Weapon System, the Precursor Thermal Power Generator, and many will be found in the Primary Research Facility. They will be used to create Ion Crystal Matrices. Ion Crystals can spawn as a large resource deposit.
